Garage roofing with architectural shingles or tyvek

When it comes to garage roofing, there are several options to choose from when designing your detached garage project. While they may increase the cost, architectural shingles, and a weather resistant barrier/house wrap are worthy investments for the long-term life of your garage.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional or laminated shingles, are multi-layered and made with an asphalt base allowing them to withstand both high winds and weather better than the more inexpensive 3-tab shingle. This higher-quality shingle is more durable and water resistant, and worth the cost over the life of the roof.

Architectural shingles have a longer lifespan. A builder’s grade shingle will last a package listed 20-25 years (you are lucky to see the minimum of that range in the Chicagoland area). Architectural shingles typically come with a 50 year or limited lifetime warranty as they do last a lot longer due to their more robust design.

Aesthetically speaking, architectural shingles offer you a wider variety of designs and colors than their cheaper counterparts, providing a three-dimensional look to the roof of your garage. It is important to remember that this investment is increasing the value of your home and clients often times ask for shingles to match their home.

Weather Resistant Barrier/House Wraps

A weather resistant barrier or house wrap, often just referred to as Tyvek (The most recognized brand of barrier on the market), is a product that is used to protect the walls of your building, installed behind the siding to shed rainwater away. This is especially important with vinyl siding as this type of siding is not weatherproof by itself. When protecting the walls of your garage it is important to consider the various ways water can potentially enter your structure. Water, left unattended to, will eventually cause damage to your new garage.
