Week Four: Design Your Garage Around Your Car

Some people see a garage and see parking. An automotive enthusiast sees something else entirely.

It’s a workshop. It’s a place to work on a car, maintain a motorcycle, restore something old, or simply spend a Saturday afternoon turning wrenches and changing oil.

If that’s how you see your garage, plan for it from the beginning.

Start With the Cars

How many vehicles need to fit inside?

Do you want room to walk around them?

Will you need additional depth?

Would a car lift make sense?

A lift can dramatically change how you use a garage, but it also changes what you need from the building.

Look Up

Here’s something homeowners sometimes overlook the floor isn’t the only thing you need to plan. Look at the ceiling.

If a car lift is part of the plan, ceiling height becomes an important consideration.

That’s one reason it’s better to decide how you intend to use the garage before the design is finalized.

Power Where You Need It

Automotive work often requires more electrical power than basic garage storage. Think about tools, compressors, chargers, lighting, lifts, and future equipment.

You may not know exactly what you’ll own five years from now.

The goal is to give yourself some flexibility and think ahead.

Build Around the Workbench, Not Just the Vehicle

A good workshop needs more than floor space.

You’ll want storage for tools and parts, room for a workbench, adequate lighting, and enough space to move around the vehicle safely.

The car may be the reason you’re building the garage, but the space around it is what makes the garage useful.

Plan for the work, the tools, the storage, and the hobby. Because the best automotive garage isn’t simply a place to keep a car.

It’s a place where you can actually work on it.
