Week One: Design Your Garage Around Football

Fall in Chicagoland means changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and football.

And if your garage is already becoming the place where everyone gathers before and after the game, why not plan the space around it?

A garage can make a pretty good entertainment room, but it works a lot better when you think about the details during the design process.

Start With the Viewing Area

The first thing to figure out is where the television will go.

That sounds simple, but the location of the TV can affect the rest of the garage layout. You’ll want to think about seating, viewing angles, electrical outlets, lighting, and how people will move throughout the space.

Planning those items during construction is much easier than trying to make them work afterward.

Don’t Forget Electrical

Today’s entertainment spaces need more than one outlet.

Think about your television, streaming equipment, speakers, refrigerator, chargers, and anything else you may want to plug in.

If you’re planning the garage from scratch, this is the time to think ahead.

What About Comfort?

If you want to use the garage during the colder months, insulation and heating become important considerations.

An insulated overhead door, insulated service door, and dual-pane windows can also give you more flexibility if you eventually decide to finish the interior.

You don’t necessarily have to finish everything on day one. You just want to build the garage so that you have the option later.

Make Room for More Than Football

Maybe the TV is for football in the fall and hockey or basketball in the winter.

Maybe it’s a place for friends to gather, play games, or work on a project.

That’s the advantage of designing a custom space. You aren’t just building around a car. You’re building around how you live.

So, here’s the question:

If you could design your garage around football, what would you put in it?
